Growing in Practically any Space: Community Gardening in Vancouver

Two years ago I joined a community garden and have been tending to my garden plot for the past couple seasons. My plot is in the Davie Village Community Garden, at the corner of Burrard and Davie in downtown Vancouver. I really took to it and enjoyed being part of the garden, which led me to notice other community gardens. Thus grew an interest to visit and harvest ideas and inspiration from all these other community gardens in the city.

This blog captures my notes from this project as I explore gardens in other neighbourhoods. My plan is to visit as many community gardens in Vancouver as I can (and as I discover them). It is pretty impressive just how many community gardens there are; the more I wander around, the more I come across and discover. The goal for this project is to capture and share community gardening inspiration and ideas, primarily through a photo essay and brief discussion in each post about a garden I have visited. The theme will look for that unique thing a particular community garden is doing, or some encouraging story about how it started and its members. I will look to visit gardens a few times during the growing season to follow their progress and continue to build their story through a few posts.

Let me tell you about my own garden plot. I started without much of a plan, but it grew well nonetheless. I started with mostly tomatoes and flowers that first year, but have added things like a curry plant and strawberries. The curry plant I started as a cutting from another curry plant growing in another plot at the end of my first season. This winter I have garlic, tulips, and daffodils waiting to poke through the soil in the spring. My plot is #97 if you want to visit and see my plants.

Here is a picture of my community garden plot during my rookie season in 2009:
